Julie Otsuka’s debut novel When the Emperor was Divine was honored with an Asian American Literary Award as well as an Alex Award by the American Library Association. The historical fiction novel plays with the concepts of time and hope by telling the story of a Japanese-American family, taken from their home in Berkeley, California, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Julie Otsuka’s carefully researched debut explores the U.S. internment of Japanese citizens during WWII. Her novel is also partially autobiographical, since it is loosely based on the experiences of her mother’s family.
The German version of the book „Als der Kaiser ein Gott“ war will be released on September 1.
