In September, Let’s Read will discuss Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel “The Sympathizer.“

This debut novel written by Nguyen reflects on the Vietnamese experiences of the Vietnam War and its aftermath through the eyes of the unnamed narrator, a half-French and half-Vietnamese spy serving the Communist cause. But as the book title hints at, the narrator is not rooting for one side, but is torn between two opposing worlds, two ideologies, and two identities. The narrative of this bestseller deals with a variety of relevant themes, including racism, memory, and the ambivalence of identity.

The espionage thriller “The Sympathizer” is the winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
