In 2022 alone, there have already been 309 mass shootings in the United States. Just recently, an elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas killed 21 students and teachers and injured many more. This and other recent tragic events have reignited the debate on gun control in the United States, and right now it is as relevant as ever.

With guns come violence, mass shootings and deaths, but for many Americans, owning a gun is a fundamental right. On the other hand, protests for stricter gun control and laws grow, especially among young Americans.

In this special event, we will first give a brief overview of the history of guns, the demographics of gun ownership, and the politics of gun legislation in the U.S. We will also focus on current arguments and discuss why the debate seems to be at a dead end. Afterwards, students will have the opportunity to discuss these issues with former members of the U.S. Congress from both sides of the aisle (one Democrat and one Republican) and ask them questions.

This event is part of our „Let’s Talk Politics“ event series in which school classes discuss current issues with Former Members of Congress. Our most recent discussion on „The Future of NATO“ can be found on our YouTube channel.

In cooperation with: Former Members of Congress and Landeszentrale für politische Bildung BW
