Major international sports events such as the Soccer World Cup or the Olympic Games bring athletes and fans from all over the world together – and provide a perfect opportunity for host nations to present themselves in a positive light. In recent years, however, there has been growing criticism of the discrepancy between host countries’ selfpromotion and their political shortcomings such as human rights violations. Where does sports diplomacy end and sportswashing start? Is there a difference between tournaments taking place in Qatar or China in comparison to the U.S. or European countries? Is the sports arena also always a political one?
We will take a closer look at sporting events that were politically significant in the past and the current debate around recent and upcoming tournaments. Afterwards, students will have the opportunity to discuss these issues with former members of the U.S. Congress from both
sides of the aisle (one Democrat and one Republican) and ask them questions.
This event is part of our „Let’s Talk Politics“ event series in which school classes discuss current issues with Former Members of Congress.
In cooperation with: Former Members of Congress and Landeszentrale für politische Bildung BW
