„The Leica taught me how to take pictures.“ In only a few words, Fred Stein (1909–1967) describes his „training“ as a photographer. Stein, a lawyer, was forced to flee his native Dresden in 1933 by the Nazis due to Nazi intimidation since he was a Jew and a socialist. He had the opportunity to begin a second profession with his camera as a portrait photographer while in exile in Paris, which he successfully carried on in New York in 1941. He significantly influenced contemporary „street photography“ in both locations simultaneously.
The acclaimed documentary „Out of Exile. The Photography of Fred Stein“ follows the photographer’s turbulent life and describes how his long-forgotten work was rediscovered.
The film is presented by the director and son of the photographer, Peter Stein.
