Democracy is facing unprecedented challenges across the globe, with populism and extremism on the rise in both the U.S. and Europe. These movements have manifested through various right-wing and left-wing groups that challenge democratic political establishments, emphasize nationalism, and often advocate for radical policy changes.
In the U.S., this trend is exemplified by the rise of political figures who exploit divisions and promote anti-establishment rhetoric. Countries like Hungary and Poland have seen populist leaders who challenge judicial independence and media freedoms, while far-right parties in France, Germany, and Italy continue to gain support by emphasizing nationalism and anti-immigrant sentiments.
In this interactive workshop, we will explore the concept of populism, look at global trends, and learn how to counter populism in daily life. Students will use Mentimeter to participate in quizzes and polls and share their own questions and thoughts.
