What does a 19th-century painting have to do with today’s debates about immigration, identity, and belonging? How can a monument spark a conversation that connects the Civil War to the Black Lives Matter movement? As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, this teacher training explores how key topics in American history can be taught in engaging and meaningful ways.

Using selected examples from U.S. history, participants will deepen their historical and cultural understanding while exploring practical approaches for the classroom. The workshop combines academic background knowledge with interactive teaching ideas that encourage students to work with historical sources, consider different perspectives, and connect the past to the present.

Together, we will explore how topics such as democracy, slavery, civil rights, and national identity continue to shape American society, politics, and public debates and how they can be incorporated into the classroom. Join us to discover fresh perspectives, practical teaching strategies, and inspiring ideas for bringing American history to life.
