Black Licorice follows the journey of Italian-American Frederica (Freddi), an only child who has never desired or understood the intricacies of friendship. After failing to be there for her best – and only – friend and getting pulled out of music school, Freddi is forced to prove herself. Her potential new friendship with Lorna is tested when Freddi learns Lorna is keeping something from her. Battista-Parsons novel offers an honest exploration of the complexities and challenges of forming authentic connections.
