Dank der U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart (USAG) gibt es in der Landeshauptstadt und Umgebung eine große amerikanische Community. Mehr als 28.000 amerikanische Militärangehörige, zivile Mitarbeitende, Angestellte von Dienstleistern und ihre Familienmitglieder sind hier stationiert. Das Motto der Garnison lautet „I’m Glad I Live Here!“ und der Großteil der Amerikaner*innen lebt – anders als vermutet – nicht auf den Stützpunkten, sondern in unseren Nachbarschaften.

USAG besteht aus vier Standorten – Patch Barracks in Vaihingen, Kelley Barracks in Möhringen, Robinson Barracks auf dem Burgholzhof und der Panzer Kaserne in Böblingen. Der Zugang zu den Stützpunkten ist nur authorisierten Personen und ihren angemeldeten Gästen (nur in Begleitung) möglich. Ausnahmen sind seit ein paar Jahren Veranstaltungen wie Tage der offenen Tür und ähnliche Veranstaltungen, bei denen zum Teil auch die Öffentlichkeit zugelassen wird.

Robinson Barracks befindet sich auf dem Burgholzhof, wo sich bereits ab 1927 militärisches Gelände der Reichswehr und später eine Kaserne der Wehrmacht befand. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Gelände von den amerikanischen Besatzungskräften zunächst als Lager für Displaced Persons genutzt. Ab 1948 wurden dort die Robinson Barracks eingerichtet. Benannt ist die Kaserne nach dem amerikanischen Offizier James E. Robinson Jr., der für seine Leistungen im Zweiten Weltkrieg posthum mit der Medal of Honor ausgezeichnet wurde. Ab Mitte der 1990er Jahre gab das US-Militär Teile des Geländes auf, was die städtebauliche Entwicklung des neuen Stadteils Burgholzhof ermöglichte.

Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Standorten in Stuttgart und Böblingen, werden die Robinson Barracks hauptsächlich als Wohnquartier genutzt. Neben Wohneinheiten, Geschäften und Einrichtungen des täglichen Bedarfs befinden sich unter anderem eine Bibliothek und die Robinson Elementary School auf dem Gelände. Seit 2013 ist Robinson Barracks auch wieder der Standort des Radiosenders AFN Stuttgart, der dort ein neues Studio eingerichtet hat.

Thanks to the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart (USAG), there is a large American community in the state capital and the surrounding area. More than 28,000 American military personnel, civilian employees, employees of service providers and their family members are stationed here. The garrison’s motto is “I’m Glad I Live Here!” and the majority of Americans – contrary to expectations – do not live on the bases, but in our neighborhoods.

USAG consists of four locations – Patch Barracks in Vaihingen, Kelley Barracks in Möhringen, Robinson Barracks on the Burgholzhof and the Panzer Kaserne in Böblingen. Access to the bases is only possible for authorized persons and their registered guests (only when accompanied). For a few years now, exceptions have been made for events such as open days and similar events, some of which are open to the public.

Robinson Barracks is located on the Burgholzhof, where military grounds of the Reichswehr and later a barracks of the Wehrmacht were located as early as 1927. After the Second World War, the site was initially used by the American occupying forces as a camp for displaced persons. From 1948, the Robinson Barracks were established there. The barracks are named after the American officer James E. Robinson Jr. who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his service in the Second World War. From the mid-1990s, the US military gave up parts of the site, which enabled the urban development of the new Burgholzhof district.

In contrast to the other sites in Stuttgart and Böblingen, the Robinson Barracks are mainly used as a residential area. In addition to residential units, stores and facilities for everyday needs, there is also a library and Robinson Elementary School on the site. Since 2013, Robinson Barracks has also once again been the location of the AFN Stuttgart radio station, which has set up a new studio there.
