How can we tell facts from fiction in today’s media landscape? This interactive online workshop explores the role of media in a democracy and the growing challenge of fake news, with a particular focus on the United States. Together, we will define what fake news is – and what it isn’t – and consider its impact on public opinion and democratic processes. We will look at the historical foundations of a free press, examine how and why misinformation spreads, and discuss real-world cases where fake news has had serious political or social consequences.
Participants will actively engage through Mentimeter surveys, quizzes, and group discussions. The workshop will also introduce practical tools and strategies for identifying fake news and navigating media more critically. Whether you‘re a university student, educator, or simply curious, this session will help you better understand and confront the misinformation that shapes our world.
