The United States became a formal nation in 1776. Ever since, its authors have significantly contributed to the shaping of world literature. Therefore this presentation wants to reflect on some of the thematic concerns and formal experiments in the American novel genre over the last 250 years.
It will discuss literary texts from romanticism to postmodernism and comment on their far-reaching artistic expressions in the context of America’s social, political and economic history. Exemplary works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Dean Howells, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Kurt Vonnegut, Toni Morrison and Kathy Acker will be addressed in this survey talk.
With: Dr. Wolfgang Holtkamp (University of Stuttgart) and students of the American Studies Literature Department
