Democracy thrives when citizens actively participate. But how can young people make their voices heard? In this interactive online workshop, that is part of our annual event series on democracy, we will explore the various ways people in the U.S. and Germany engage with politics. Students will learn about the history and culture of protest – from American civil rights marches and Vietnam War demonstrations to East Germany’s peaceful Revolution in 1989 and contemporary climate strikes – and see how public action has shaped policy and society.
We will also examine opportunities for civic Engagement today. Students will learn how citizens in both countries can participate in decision-making processes through town hall meetings, youth councils, or grassroots campaigns. By comparing these examples, they will reflect on their potential roles in democratic processes and explore ways to contribute to the issues that matter to them. Throughout the session, students will engage via Mentimeter by joining quizzes, voting in polls, and sharing their thoughts and questions in real time.
