From the rice paddies of China to Silicon Valley: The novel “Real Americans” (translated into German by Tobias Schnettler) tells the story of three generations of a Chinese-American family, beginning in New York City on New Year’s Eve 1999.

Lily Chen is 22, the daughter of Chinese immigrants and an unpaid intern at a trendy media company. She falls in love with Matthew—charming, privileged, heir to a pharmaceutical empire. Two worlds collide, and yet everything seems possible. Twenty-one years later, Lily’s son Nick lives with her on a remote island. When he begins searching for his father, he uncovers secrets that change everything.
