In May Let’s Read! will discuss Real Americans by Rachel Khong (399 pp).

In her second novel, Khong offers us a multi-generational family saga that covers events from the Cultural Revolution in China to the 9/11 attacks, and ventures as far ahead as the year 2030. While Y2K looms over New York City, Lily and Matthew – broke daughter of scientists who fled the Cultural Revolution and heir to a pharmaceutical empire – fall in love respectively. Fifteen years later, Nick leaves Washington and his mother Lily to learn about his father, struggling with his family and biracial identity. In 2030, Mei looks back on fleeing China to raising her daughter Lily in America. Using DNA and parenthood, Khong asks what it means to be American, and who gets answer that question.
