Returning to her Ohio hometown, Macy blends memoir and investigative journalism to examine how economic decline, political polarization, and misinformation have divided families and communities. She illustrates both the decline of industry and the fates of individuals in a community where enslaved people once found refuge via the Underground Railroad, and where today it is not uncommon to see Confederate flags.
